An online video of Akwatia MP’s final interview prior to his untimely death

After a brief illness, the lawmaker tragically passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025. Although neither family members nor medical authorities have yet to reveal the cause of death, his unexpected passing has shocked coworkers and constituents alike.
Adom TV footage shows that on Friday, July 4, the late Mr. Kumi appeared on the station’s morning show Badwam for the final time. Public interest in the circumstances surrounding his death has increased as a result of the video, which shows the apparently animated MP passionately discussing matters pertaining to Parliament and governance.
Ernest Yaw Kumi was born in Akim Wenchi, Eastern Region, on Wednesday, December 5, 1984.
He received an LLB from Mountcrest University College (2019), an MBA in Corporate Governance from the University of Professional Studies (2014), a BSc in Ports and Shipping Administration from the Regional Maritime University (2009), and an MSc in Defense and International Politics from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (2022).
After a fiercely contested general election in 2024, Mr. Kumi was elected to Parliament on the ticket of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). Henry Yiadom Boakye, a candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), received 17,206 votes, while he received 19,269 votes. However, his win was disputed and turned into the focus of a drawn-out court case.
After he disregaded an interim injunction that prevented him from taking the oath of office as MP for the Akwatia videoonstituency, the Koforidua High Court issued a warrant for his arrest on February 18 for contempt of court. His opponent filed the injunction, contesting the validity of the election results.
However, citingjudicial bias in the initial ruling, the Supreme Court later overturned the High Court’s decision in a majority decision of 4-1. This made it possible for Mr. Kumi to take the oath of office in Parliament.
He worked hard on the House Committee and the Lands and Natural Resources Committee while he was a member of Parliament.
