The NPP maintains that it won the election in the Ablekuma North rerun, saying, “We’ll never be intimidated.”

In 19 polling places in the Ablekuma North Constituency, the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has sworn to oppose any attempt by the Electoral Commission (EC) to hold a rerun of the parliamentary elections.

The party claims that its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, won the election on December 7, 2024, by a margin of 414 votes, and that such a move will be strongly opposed.

The Electoral Commission declared in a statement dated July 2 that it would rerun the election in the contested polling places on Friday, July 11, 2025. It stated that the decision was intended to end the constituency’s lengthy electoral deadlock.

At a news conference held in Ablekuma North on Tuesday, 8 July, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, strongly criticised the EC’s actions, describing them as “shameful”. He stated:

”The inconsistency from the Electoral Commission is a shame. But for us in the New Patriotic Party, we remain resolute and we know that our candidate, Nana Akua Owusu, won the election with a margin of 414 votes—this is based on facts and figures”.

Mr. Kodua urged the EC to finish the collation process rather than holding a rerun, insisting that the party’s candidate won all 19 of the polling places in question. He cited an order from the High Court that accused the Commission of contempt of court on January 4, 2025:

”We have the results from all 19 polling stations—scanned copies, duly signed by agents of the NDC, NPP, and the presiding officers. We clearly won in Ablekuma North. The High Court, on 4 January, ruled that the Electoral Commission’s task is simple: to collate the results and declare the winner”.

He continued:

”Yesterday, when the National Executive Committee met, we unanimously agreed that under no circumstances will we be intimidated. Never. We will not be coerced into accepting a rerun. What we are demanding is for the Electoral Commission to respect the court’s directive, complete the collation, and declare our candidate as the MP.”

In the meantime, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, has filed a lawsuit to prevent the EC from holding the rerun.

On Monday, July 7, 2025, Ms. Owusu Afriyie, accompanied by attorney Gary Nimako, filed a lawsuit in the Accra High Court contesting the legitimacy and rationale behind the EC’s ruling. The lawsuit contends that the Commission’s action violates her constitutional rights in addition to being “arbitrary and unreasonable.”

Since then, the case has drawn a lot of attention as tensions build before the EC’s planned rerun.
