Why Thomas Partey is able to sign with a new team in spite of rape allegations

On Friday, July 4, 2025, the UK’s Metropolitan Police formally charged Ghanaian international Thomas Partey with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

Arsenal complied with the legal advice they had received since Thomas Partey’s initial arrest, which included making sure that adequate protective measures were in place, in order to reassure other Arsenal employees. It is unlikely that a full court trial will be held in his case until 2026.

According to senior reporter Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports, the Black Stars player is now free to sign with any team despite the charges.

This is due to UK law, which states that unless a suspect is proven guilty in a court of law, they are presumed innocent.

Meanwhile, Partey, through his lawyer, has denied all the charges. A statement from his lawyer, Jenny Wiltshir,e read:

Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.

And Arsenal stated to the BBC about the case, saying:

The player’s contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.
